John Muir was born in Dunbar, East Lothian in 1838 to local parents Daniel Muir and Ann Gilrye. Best known as the father of conservation, John Muir travelled to America and became a well-read author and activist, founding the sierra club in California. Petitioning the US Congress he managed to successfully get the national park bill of 1890 passed establishing Yosemite national park which has been enjoyed by so many since. His father originally a shop keeper in the harbour town of Dunbar became an oats dealer and a councillor actively being involved in shaping the future of Dunbar. It was religion which took the Muir family from Dunbar to America, with the faith of Daniel Muir leading him to Wisconsin.
In April 2014 the John Muir Way will be opened commemorating 100 years since John Muir passed away. The John Muir Way brings you close to the most stunning nature central Scotland has to offer, from the Harbour town of Dunbar through to Scotland’s first national park at Loch Lomond you will find so much to discover along the way. This official recognition of such an important figure of conservationism is a fitting tribute to accompany the Statue and Birthplace museum which currently attract so many visitors to Dunbar.
